There are five steps to be completed so that your application to the NYU Medical Scientist Training Program can be processed properly. For additional information, please see our section on frequently asked questions as well.

Step 1:
Submit your AMCAS Application online no later than October 15 through the American Medical College Application Service

Deadline: October 15

Step 2:
In order to successfully complete your AMCAS application, you must include MSTP Recommendation Letters.

Please have all letters of recommendation for the MD/PhD Program sent directly to AMCAS. Letters should not be sent to the MD/PhD Program office; they will not be reviewed. MSTP Letters of Recommendation must be written and submitted by research mentors and must adhere to the following guidelines:

– provide a detailed description of your research
– address your potential as a research scientist
– must not be identical to letters requested by the medical school

Step 3:
As the admissions committee reviews several hundred applications throughout the season, it is required that you send an email to Polina Miklush, NYU MD/PhD Program Office, at by October 15 that includes the following information:

– a list of the faculty and research mentors writing letters of recommendation on your behalf with their names, titles, email addresses, and daytime phone numbers including area codes.
– an indication of which letters of recommendation are for the medical school and which are specifically for the MD/PhD Program in this email.

Use the subject line "MSTP Recommendation Letters."

Step 4:
After your submission to AMCAS, you will receive an email confirming your successful completion of the application. You will be given specific instructions on how to complete the secondary application that is required for MD/PhD admission. It is important to read all instructions carefully before attempting to fill out the application. Please do not attempt to access the link for the secondary application without receiving an email from the admissions office.

Step 5:
Once your secondary application has been successfully submitted and reviewed, you will receive an email stating your status in the admissions process. If selected for an interview, you will be asked to submit a clear photo of yourself to AMCAS (jpeg format, no larger than 300x300). Please wait for instructions before doing so.

Keep in mind:

During this admissions process, you may expect email notification from the NYU MSTP at these following points:

– when we receive verification from AMCAS of your application;
– when your application is complete and under review; and
– when you are either invited for interview or your application is forwarded to the NYU Medical School admissions office for their review.

Until then, your application remains under review by the MSTP. The interview period generally begins in September and concludes in December, with acceptance offers extended in mid-February.

Please note:
Interviews cannot be scheduled until applications are processed and complete.
The NYU MSTP is currently not participating in the NIH Graduate Program Partnership (GPP).
